Verizon to Charge $2 for Online, Phone Payments

Verizon Wireless announced Thursday that it will soon implement a $2 convenience charge for its customers who make one-time bill payments by telephone or Internet, with the fee going into effect January 15th. The company explained that the fee will allow the company to continue to support those payment options, and was designed to address costs incurred by Verizon expressly for those customers making payments in those methods.

According to Verizon, there are several ways customers can avoid the charge, including using online bill pay options offered by a number of banks, including Citigroup. Customers can also make one-time payments using an electronic check or use a Verizon gift card or rebate card to avoid the fee. But any single payment made online or by telephone will be subject to the new $2 fee.

Verizon will continue to offer its automatic payment method for free, which automatically deducts monthly bills from customers' bank accounts. Users will also have the option of using snail mail, or even walking into a physical Verizon store to make payments without paying the convenience charge.
